Behind Dong Tam Coffee Farm is a story of a young man desiring to change the coffee industry's future for his people and his beloved homeland—Di Linh District, Lam Dong Province, Vietnam.

Mr. Nguyen Van Chien, owner of Dong Tam Coffee Farm, comes from a family with a long tradition of growing coffee trees. The family gained their land in 1993 and started cultivating coffee trees using traditional methods in 1995.

It was not until 2016/2017, during a trip to Ha Noi to learn more about coffee, Mr. Van Chien decided to write his very own “organic coffee story”.

Mr. Van Chien has realized the importance of shifting from traditional cultivation to sustainable ones and the benefits that this change offers him and other local farmers. He shared with VCA that coffee farmers had struggled for many years to find a stable market for their green coffee beans. By transforming the cultivation model, he believed that he and his team could produce higher-quality green coffee beans, increase their productivity, lower costs, and most importantly preserve the natural environment.

With a strong will to open new doors for his farm, Mr. Van Chien has self-researched the knowledge of cultivating coffee organically. He takes the sustainable coffee-growing process from other successful farms and adjusts it to suit Dong Tam Coffee Farm.

Putting the theories into practice, Mr. Van Chien invests in using manure fertilizer, cutting down harmful chemicals (synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, etc.), and building linking agricultural households models.

Thanks to all these efforts, Dong Tam Coffee Farm can produce high-quality green coffee beans that reward the farmers with a higher and more stable income while protecting the environment.

However, his sustainable coffee-growing journey will not stop here. With the hope to develop his homeland’s coffee industry, he has convinced other local farmers to join in the organic coffee cultivation methods, bought roasting and grinding machines, and upgraded his physic and chemical knowledge. Mr. Van Chien believed preparation is the key to success.

Staffs of the Vietnam Coffee Association (VCA) have travelled to Dong Tam Coffee Farm to inspect their farm's conditions and collect their green coffee beans samples:
